When the preservation of the Soundings radio shows is complete, the archive will have a transcript of 862 programs capturing the voices of eminent scholars and writers passionately discussing their work. The preservation of Soundings will allow scholars and the public worldwide to freely access the archive in its entirety and glance into a national treasure of the humanities and merits.
The NHC believes that preserving the original archives and providing access to the digitized episodes of the Soundings radio program provides a valuable resource to scholars and to the public. The NHC is providing the raw materials which include LP records, open reel tapes, audiocassettes, U-Matic digital masters, digital audio tapes, compact discs, photographs and paper files for the project.
The audio preservation staff of UNC's Wilson Library have digitized the Soundings episodes from the best available audio format, preserving the content for preservation and access. UNC Libraries are storing the physical items in a cool and stable climate controlled environment and hosting the electronic data archive.
